The Mosaic Communities Project

OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

We’re committed to the rights, safety, and dignity, of every immigrant.

No one should face this journey alone. And together, no one will.

Mosaic Communities Project helps bridge the financial gap between legal aid groups, pro bono attorneys, and paid legal representation when the case or attorney workload require it. Due to the demand for immigration representation, client needs exceed volunteer capacity and private attorneys are required. All beneficiaries are referred to us from reputable legal aid groups and we partner only with established immigration attorneys to ensure appropriate representation.

We started informally as a small group of neighbors helping neighbors in 2025 and achieved IRS recognition as a 501(C)(3) in 2026. Since the first request for assistance, we’ve helped more than 33 individuals cover over $80,000 in legal expenses on their path to citizenship.

Who We Are

A movement built on belonging

The Mosaic Communities Project stands alongside immigrants and their families as they build safe, secure, and dignified lives in their new communities. We invest in trusted legal advocacy and community-based support because lasting justice is achieved when people come together to ensure that every individual has the opportunity to belong, thrive, and contribute.

The need

The work, in numbers

60,000

The number of immigrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention on a daily basis more than doubled to 70,000 at its peak in January 2026, before stabilizing around 60,000 in April 2026.

143

The recent case load of an individual immigration judge. Recent federal enforcement pushes have more than doubled caseloads within certain immigration courts nationwide. In extreme instances of “mega master hearings,” individual judges have been tasked with overseeing as many as 143 cases simultaneously.

80,000

“voluntary departure” orders Immigration judges issued between January 2025 and March 2026. Rather than signifying a peaceful resolution, this soaring number indicates that many asylum seekers and individuals with legitimate humanitarian protection claims are actively abandoning their cases simply to escape the prospect of indefinite, harsh detention conditions.

"Thank you very much, it is a great blessing to be able to count on you."

Whispered in Immigration Court: "Will you be my friend?"

"I am writing to thank you for your incredibly generous support of my client, “John.” ... He was completely overwhelmed that a stranger has been willing to pay for his attorney. He asked me to specifically tell you that he sends you God’s blessings and a huge hug. He has been illegally detained for 14 months, and we are fighting for his release through a habeas petition. In the meantime, he has an active asylum case that our organization did not have capacity to take. Your generosity has allowed us to secure him an attorney in that case. His sense of relief was palpable at knowing he would be represented by a quality lawyer. John has been through tremendous suffering in his home country. Your solidarity has given him a real morale boost, and I cannot explain what that means to someone sitting in a detention facility. As he expressed his gratitude for you today during our call, we were both in tears."

"...tomorrow is my court appointment and I'm very afraid that they will arrest me and deport me. I'm very worried about my kids and the worst thing is that I don't have a house to live in back in [the anticipated deportation location]. I have nothing."
